The European Union is, today, a much better partner of Sabac than the Serbian government is, stated the Mayor Nebojsa Zelenovic.

The EU is in fact the best partner which Sabac currently has, said Zelenovic, who is the Mayor of the only city and one of only six municipalities in Serbia in which the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) is not in power.

“In the previous couple of years, the EU has donated 30 million euros for the most important projects and I am therefore honoured when the ambassadors of the EU countries come to our city”, said Zelenovic, who on Tuesday hosted the Danish Ambassador in Serbia Anders Christian Hougard.

The Democratic Party (DS), Together for Serbia (ZZS) and the Social Democratic Party (SDS), which at one point made up the DS, are together again, after uniting on Sunday into the unified Democratic Party (DS). Among other things, the gathering in Belgrade saw the adoption of the Declaration on the Joint Struggle for European values, Serbia’s admission into the EU and restoration of seized freedoms.

DS President Zoran Lutovac called on all the democrats to together build a new DS and “reclaim the seized freedom.” Lutovac mentioned freeing the media and ensuring fair elections, followed by the creation of an interim government, as the goals of the joint opposition forces.

President of the ZZS and co-chairman of the United DS Nebojsa Zelenovic said that the DS has changed Serbia, contributed to making Serbia better and more modern, and that it will do so again. He said that they key issue is finding new political champions throughout Serbia, from Vranje to Subotica, and to open doors to new, capable and bold people who will lead the citizens in their cities and municipalities in the struggle for a normal life.

Zelenovic pointed out that the Democrats are starting a big campaign aimed at creating a network of 50,000 volunteers, party activists throughout the country, which will allow for fair elections to be held and prevent the stealing of votes.

Commenting the opposition’s decision not to take part in elections if they are not fair, as well as the decision to boycott republic and local parliaments until conditions for the normal operation of those institutions are created, Zelenovic said that such decisions were difficult but necessary. The difficult and necessary decisions that he mentioned included political alliances with parties that are very different from the DS, i.e. the creation of the Alliance for Serbia and the Agreement with the People.

“Our opponent is dangerous and unscrupulous, an incredible destroyer of normal life and he is prepared to do anything. When facing such political storms, alliances must be created with anyone who is prepared to fight for a regular life, for freedom, for free elections,” Zelenovic said.

This week’s announcement of Serbian Defense Ministry and military leadership that Army of Serbia (VS) “will not allow coup d’etat” was a shameful attempt to involve the army into the politics, the chairman of the opposition block Alliance for Serbia (SzS) Nebojsa Zelenovic emphasized.

Zelenovic, also Mayor of Sabac, said for Al Jazeera in South Slavic languages that this announcement  involved the army into “a reality show” created by Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic.

“In my book, this is shameful, but [VS generals] have decided to get involved in this reality show. Because, who can organize a coup d’etat if not the state, and especially the army? It is like that they have said they would protect the state from themselves”, he said.

Zelenovic accused Vucic that he would like to “produce violence (…) by constantly calling people fascists”, and he added that the opposition would try to “keep things peaceful”, and he emphasized that “this makes Vucic nervous”.

“Vucic will not provoke us. We will lead our protest smartly and peacefully like we have. We will beat him at the elections and this will happen when we liberate the media and institutions”, he said.

With all obstructions the opposition was facing, especially in the past weeks, and the fear of citizens over threats they would receive if they should publicly reveal themselves as the opponents of Vucic’s regime, SzS still expected that a lot of people would gather on the protest in Belgrade on Saturday, Zelenovic said.

“We are defending human rights and freedoms on the protests and we are doing this in a decent way. We expect to pressure the government through the protests. They have no response for peaceful protests and thus they attempt to cause destruction and riots and dominate them”, he said.

About the statements that the international circles, primarily European Union, there were recommendations for the opposition to return to the institutions, he responded that the opposition would not return to them “because these institutions are not doing their job”.

The Mayor of Sabac Nebojsa Zelenovic, a person leading the only city not ruled by Serbian Progressive Party, received threats and the police was informed about the case.

As it was stated in the announcement of his cabinet, Zelenovic received threats in his workplace, in a moment when he was waiting to meet the German Ambassador, by a 60-year old man. It was added that the man entered the office of Mayor of Sabac on Monday, insulted him vulgarly and told him that he would “come to his house to deal” with him.

Sabac Mayor also received threats in December, when a Facebook user stated the address in which Zelenovic was living with his family and invited other users of this social network to “gather in front of the building and chase him out of the city”.

One of the Alliance for Serbia (SzS) leaders, Nebojsa Zelenovic, commenting on Vucic’s text in the Srpski Telegraf, saying that Vucic knows that he stands no chance to win free elections.

“Response to Vucic is clear: we demand free and democratic elections. There will never again be rigged and elections stolen in advance! Vucic will face civil disobedience and blockade of the entire country if he does not free all the media and stop creating an atmosphere of fear, threats and political violence,” Zelenovic said.

He added that at that time the whole world would have to face the fact that there is no democracy in Serbia and that a dictatorship is being created in the heart of Europe.

“Vucic knows that he stands no chance at all in free elections and that citizens in the atmosphere of freedom and objective information would never support his lies, lawlessness and catastrophic results of the authorities,” Zelenovic said.
